This week’s search and AI news covers four threads that don’t reduce to a single ranking chart: a spam update working through the index, Google building interactive tools directly into AI answers, a new button that lets readers choose your site as a preferred source, and a sudden, still-unexplained drop in how often ChatGPT cites Reddit. Here’s what changed and what it means for your work.

Google rolls out the August 2026 spam update

Google began rolling out its August 2026 spam update on August 18 — its third spam update of the year. Google’s Search Status Dashboard says the rollout may take a few days; for comparison, the March update finished in under 20 hours and the June update took about two days. Google hasn’t announced any new spam policies alongside this update, and its spam policies page hasn’t changed since December.

Google’s John Mueller took questions about the rollout this week, addressing why spam updates are necessary in the first place and why Google doesn’t announce a rollout before it starts. The practical move here is patience: wait until the rollout is confirmed complete, then read your Search Console data from August 18 onward rather than reacting to early, partial movement. Spam updates like this one work through the index the way earlier 2026 rollouts did, so the same wait-and-verify approach applies.

Generative UI starts reaching AI Overviews

Google’s generative UI — the system that builds custom layouts, interactive tools, and simulations on the fly inside a search result, matched to the specific question asked — has started expanding from AI Mode into AI Overviews. It launched inside AI Mode in November alongside Gemini 3, and it’s now live globally in English there. Google’s announcement doesn’t specify when the AI Overviews rollout will be complete.

This matters because when Search can generate a mortgage calculator or an interactive diagram directly inside the answer, pages built around offering exactly that kind of tool now compete with the results page itself, not just with other sites. Worth checking now, before the rollout widens: which of your pages earn traffic specifically because they host an embedded calculator, quiz, or similar interactive tool. Those are the pages most exposed as generative UI expands further into AI Overviews.

Websites get a new Preferred Sources button

Google is rolling out three personalization features across Search, Discover, and Google News, the headline one being a Preferred Sources button that publishers can embed directly on their own pages. Clicking it adds the site as a preferred source for that reader and returns them to where they left off on the page. Per Google’s documentation, sites selected as preferred sources are more likely to appear in Top Stories and can carry a preferred badge inside both AI Overviews and AI Mode. More than 600,000 unique sources have been selected so far, up from more than 345,000 in May — a jump that tracks with how fast Preferred Sources has been expanding into AI search more broadly.

Unlike an algorithm update, this lever runs through your actual audience. Once a reader sets the preference, it follows them across Top Stories, AI Overviews, and AI Mode, and the embed code is already available in Search Central — which makes it one of the more directly actionable items on this list, even as some in the industry read it as another step toward a more personalized, and potentially more siloed, search experience. International SEO and AI search consultant Gianluca Fiorelli reacted to the announcement on X with a one-line assessment: “Again. Personalization everywhere.”

Reddit’s ChatGPT citation share drops sharply, with no confirmed cause

Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell sharply in mid-August, and the leading explanation on offer doesn’t fully account for it. Between July 18 and August 7, Reddit accounted for 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations; between August 14 and 17, that dropped to 0.52% — an 86.4% decrease. The first stage of the drop, on August 8, coincides with an increase in background queries ChatGPT Search was making to specific sites, but the cause of the second, larger drop remains unclear.

A citation share can move sharply within a single week, sometimes without notice and sometimes without a clear explanation — which is exactly why it’s worth treating Reddit as a reflection of how your brand is actually discussed rather than as a citation strategy you can engineer directly, a pattern that shows up elsewhere too, including in how often ChatGPT retrieves Reddit pages without actually citing them. Lily Ray, Vice President of SEO and AI Search at Amsive, quote-posted marketer Ross Simmonds’ commentary on the decline on X, writing: “Watch all of this return Reddit back to what it was supposed to be in the first place.”

The theme this week: rankings weren’t the only thing that moved

Three of this week’s four stories go beyond a typical ranking update. Generative UI lets Google build the tool a searcher needs directly into the answer. Preferred Sources turns a reader’s own preference into a signal that follows them across surfaces. Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations dropped by more than four-fifths in a matter of days, for reasons nobody has fully confirmed.

The spam update is the one item here that behaves the way ranking updates always have — it works through the index over a few days, and the response is to wait for it to finish before drawing conclusions. The other three depend on what gets built into an answer, what a reader chooses, and what a citation algorithm decides to surface, which are harder to control directly. Of the three, the Preferred Sources button is the most practical one to act on this week, precisely because it’s the one lever that runs through something you can actually influence: your own readers.
